Brendan Fraser Shares a Warm Memory of Meeting Leonardo DiCaprio When They Were Both Just Starting Out
Starring in blockbuster films of the '90s propelled Brendan Fraser and Leonardo DiCaprio to superstar status. While DiCaprio has been starring in blockbuster movies and maintaining his popularity with audiences, Fraser has had a difficult time in the spotlight recently. But now that The Mummy star is experiencing his well-earned Brenaissance, he's opening up about his humble beginnings, including a touching anecdote about Leonardo DiCaprio remembering the profound effect their first encounter had on him.

Fraser and DiCaprio collaborated on the 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon, which will be directed by Martin Scorsese. For both of them, this was one of the first occasions they'd seen each other since they were stage players. During an interview with GQ, the Whale actor recalled their first encounter, saying:
"I was a little confused because I had just seen School Ties or something and I wanted to tell him, "Hear, hear," but I didn't know how to respond. Wow, that was fantastic "Fraser shed some light. "That's what he told me again. I was still in his mind, apparently. "You were the only guy who didn't treat me like a little kid," he told me. That was information he freely gave me. This has deep significance."
Fraser continued, saying he is proud of the film and the work he has done but "doesn't know" if it would improve his life. Simply put, "it's enough," he declared. "It will continue on after I'm gone. It's great that you pointed that up. The rest, however, is probably less important. That will endure as well, but... I guess I have to simply focus on the here and now."
The two went on to feature in some of the most successful films of the 1990s and beyond, with DiCaprio playing Jack in 1997's Titanic and Fraser directing the first instalment in the Mummy franchise in 1999. I can't wait to watch them in "Flower Moon Killers" alongside Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, and John Lithgow, directed by Martin Scorsese.
This whole thing makes me think of how much I liked Fraser and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson together in "The Mummy Returns." The Rock told an amusing anecdote about meeting Fraser and expressed his delight at delivering "his flowers" for Fraser's work in "The Whale." He even expressed hope that his co-star in the Darren Aronofsky film will be nominated for and ultimately win an Academy Award for his performance.
When Fraser returns to the limelight, it is wonderful to witness the outpouring of affection, adoration, and respect that he has always deserved. It's nice that renowned actors like Leonardo DiCaprio remember the impact the 90s action hero had on them as budding performers. You can get a taste of Fraser's return in the trailer for "The Whale," and if the 2022 release schedule holds true, you can see him in a film that could earn him an Academy Award on December 9 of this year.
